From CDs to Memory cards
Its revolutionary.
EMI Music UK is releasing the new Robbie Williams greatest hits album on a memory card. The card is as big as a stamp. And the quality of the music is not too shoddy too. They say its as good as CD quality. The best thing is, people can install the memory card in their cell phones and PDAs and can listen to music on the go.
If this trend gains momentum, CDs will phase out slowly. CDs can contain only 700mb of space. And DVDs do a bit better. But this memory cards are smaller than CDs and DVDs and yet have the capacity to hold more data. Some memory cards can contain as much as 60gb of data and is less than 2 inches in size! So the potential is great (especially for "high definition" videos).
The problem is: the industry is not standardized. All cellphones and PDAs don't have SD/MMC card slots and thus these memory cards wont work in them. Once a particular type of memory card is standardized by the industry, CDs will become the next VHS.
