Live Strong Wristbands

Its almost a week since I came back to USA from my vacation in India. Highlights of my vacation:
  • Attended 4 weddings - Indian weddings
  • Had lots of spicy food
  • Enjoyed the warm winter (it never goes below 20 degrees celcius / 68 degrees fahrenheit in Bombay)
  • Drove in the Bombay traffic.
  • Had my haircut for $1.20
  • Met dozens of old friends - and had some great conversations
This post is about a recurring conversation I had with many of my friends. It so happened that I had taken a bunch of Live Strong bands to India. And no one in India seemed to know what they were.

Many asked me what the yellow bands were for

And I would tell them that you bought 10 bands for $10 from Lance Armstrong Foundation, formed by Lance Armstrong the cyclist - who had survived cancer and won the Tour De France gazillions of times! You then wear the bands to pay tribute to cancer survivors, while the money you paid for the bands actually go towards educating cancer patients on how to focus on life, and help their family to cope up with the difficulties.

After hearing all this, they would think the yellow band idea is genius!

In fact, a friend of a friend was so impressed, that she ordered blue bands like these to be made. And she plans of selling the blue bands to collect money for the Tsunami victims.

She is not alone. Hundreds of other organizations and companies have come out with their own wrist bands! Even school sports teams have jumped on the band wagon.

Why are these yellow live strong bands so successful?

More than 20 million live strong bands have been sold till date. Even celebrities like Jay Leno, Lindsay Lohan, John Kerry, Matt Damon, Olsen twins are wearing these yellow live strong bands.

But why have they caught on so well? Is it because people really want to support cancer patients and their family members? There have been many cancer foundations before, but none of them have become such huge rages...

I think there is more to it than just that. Live Strong bands became the rage just as cigarettes had become the rage. And ipods had become the rage. No not because they are cool. But because they have one inbuilt factor:

They are easily demonstrable products

Young men could smoke and show that they were mature
People could buy ipods and show that they are hip
And people can wear these yellow bands and brag about their support for cancer

How you can adapt the live strong band ideas to generate buzz about your product

You could use a similar product too, that people could use to show support for your products. If you don't want to use the bands, here are some other ideas:
  • You could sell caps with your company logo (baseball teams already do that)
  • You could sell stickers that people can stick on their cars (politicians do that)
  • You could give away certificates in frames that people can display on their walls
(A karate teacher started receiving more students when he started giving them certificates to display in their homes. Instead of just adding stripes to their belt or changing their belt colour when his students passed a level, the karate teacher also invested a few dollars and started giving them certificates in fine golden frames. And when friends of the karate students saw the certificate proudly displayed in a prominent position in rooms, they would jot down the number and call the karate teacher too)

Points to ponder:
What else can you give away that has an inherent "demonstrable" quality that could promote your company?
