Mistake to Money

Prom Dress No. 376

The above prom dress by Xcite has a unique story. Its the dress no. 376. And last year, when Xcite was showcasing all its dresses in a fashion show to its buyers, a waldrobe malfunction occured. But amazingly, this waldrobe malfunction ended up being quite profitable for the company.

A model was supposed to wear the dress no 376 and actually cross the dress straps at her neck and have the material fan out across her chest. Instead she wore it with the straps coming straight off her shoulders, crossing at her waist. Since the material didn't need to stretch as much, the straps became narrow, and therefore, much more revealing.

And as a result, Dress no. 376 ended up being the 2nd most ordered dress that night. But that was just the beginning. When news channels smelled the waldrobe malfunction, they gave free publicity to the dress, and soon a 1000 dresses were sold in no time!

A very ordinary dress became the best seller because of a mistake by a model.
  • How much latitude do you allow your employees?
  • Can they make mistakes without being afraid of getting fired?
  • What do you do after the mistake has already been made?
Answering these questions will determine the long term success of your business.

There was a mail order company that found out that sending 2 order coupons in the envelope increased the sales by almost 15%. But they would have never found this out if the company which mailed their envelopes wouldn't have committed a mistake and added in 2 instead of 1 order coupons in each envelope!

As Albert Einstein says: "A person that never made a mistake never tried anything new."

Are you making your mistakes?

Action Summary:
  • Its ok if you make mistakes. But learn from your mistakes.
  • Also learn from other peoples mistakes.
