Practice Makes You Perfect
Pablo Casals practising 6 hours a day
Reporter: Mr. Casals, you're 95 and the greatest cellist that ever lived. Why do you still practice six hours a day?
Pablo Casals: Because I think I'm making progress.
What you do between your "actual work" determines your success.
Reggie Miller, the basketball player was asked while he was retiring: how he managed to be competitive and score more points than some very good basketball players that were way younger than he was. And his reply was: Because I practice everyday between seasons while they take a vacation (paraphrased.)
Most people who are perceived as being talented started with very little talent. And a lot more perseverance. They practiced while the competition slept. And that has made all the difference for them.
But practice is Boring!
Yes, practice can be very boring. It takes a lot of determination to practice everyday. The trick is: to find a buddy to practice with. Just like having a gym buddy increases your chances of actually going to the gym everyday, having a practice buddy will increase your chances of practicing everyday too.
Search for an organization that you can join to buddy up with a lot of similar people. And what if there is no organization like that?
Then start teaching. Having students will get you new challenges everyday. And will make your practice very un-boring.
