How cars are wrecked

According to some statistics, red cars are the cars most likely to be stolen. Keeping this in mind, some researchers got together to conduct a social experiment. They left a brand new red car in a ghetto neighbourhood for one night. The neighbourhood was infamous for its car robberies. They returned the next morning and found the car intact in the same position it was left behind.

The researchers were stunned.

A few weeks later they tried to conduct the same experiment. A similar red car was left in that same ghetto neighbourhood. There was one change though: One window was broken. The next morning when the researchers came back for the car, they found that all four tires were missing. The headlights were gone. The radio was missing. The steering wheel had disappeared too. The beautiful red car was a total wreck.

The researchers conducted similar experiments in similar neighbourhoods in different parts of the country and found similar results. They used cars with different colours too. The car was never touched when no window was broken. But if the window was broken, the car would be completely demolished by the next morning.

Apparently, even thieves are controlled by their surroundings. When the thieves saw the broken window, they believed that someone had already done the damage, what harm will a bit more damage do? And they joined in the fray.

Action summary:

  • How is the ambience of your workplace? Remember: People will pay more for the same goods if they are sold from a good place (good neighbourhood, good building.)

  • You can create a good ambience by investing in good furniture. And painting the walls with soothing colours. And playing good lively music. Keep the details sharp.

  • The thieves wrecked the car when they believed some one had already broken the window. Similarly, when you show that someone has already bought from you, more people will end up buying.

  • Paste up testimonials from clients and media on the walls of the store.

  • Even thieves are affected by teir surroundings. When they see an open window, they think that some one has already ransacked the car, and so they join in the fray too.
  • Work on your image. Keep your office or store clean. Hang on testimonials on the wall. Make a positive effect on people with your surroundings.
